Issue with the aura of the sun

Editing some sunrise photos, and the aura of the sun is quite annoying when trying to adjust highlights because it’s just a big ball of white light that looks distracting and terrible. Any way to decrease it’s brightness? Or get rid of it entirely? Thanks.

Here is a nice post talking about dealing with clipped highlights. It really depends on how much information is in the raw file. When shooting really high contrast scenes, I usually bracket and look at my histogram as I shoot.
