Initial editing in DT 5.1 and then exported XCF file to open in GIMP where I used the mono mixer option to create the BW followed by levels adjustment.

But if I ignore the request for BW then maybe this twist using Hue-Chroma to reduce chroma in GIMP followed by levels adjustment.

The title of the topic says monochrome, not black and white. 
Some might argue that even two colours (one for highlights, one for shadows) could count as monochrome.
