Get a bigger coat with larger, deeper pockets (American/UK size maybe).
Get a hoodie/coat with a large front pouch pocket (camera can go in the pocket or the hood).
Get a vehicle with a large glove compartment (American car maybe).
Lose weight so your coat pocket can expand more.
Tear down the camera and make it pocketable by (re)moving parts, chips and resistors (like in those YT videos transforming the OG SNES into a portable device - “who needs a restart button, let’s remove that” “let’s replace this module with a smaller version” “let’s cut this plastic/board section that does nothing”) — plus duct tape.
I had the LX100 and LX100 II (and RX1, which is similar in size): they do fit into coat pockets, technically. But at least for me, not comfortably so. They’re too stubby, they poke out any way you pocket them. They always get hung up when pocketing or unpocketing them.
In your pockets, flatness is everything. Even an X-E3/27 is easier to pocket. A GR or RX100 are a whole different category. They are truly pocketable.
I mean, your pockets may vary. But I didn’t enjoy carrying the LX100 in my pockets, and generally preferred some sort of purse or bag. As such, I’d rate them “strappable” in my three-category scale of “pocketable”, “strappable”, “baggable”.
I have a thinktank mirrorless mover 5, it’s small, looks good and fits my X100V snugly. It won’t fit my X-T3 at all but in the absence of pockets it’s a great sling to take a small camera on.
Thank you for the many suggestions. I become quite convinced to have a device beyond my cellphone. I also came close to pulling the trigger on buying new the TG-7 based on some of the feedback here as well as elsewhere. Though I was quite willing to compromise on sensor physical size and megapixel count, and was attracted by the rugged rating, I eventually concluded that I would regret lack of viewfinder.
@Tamas_Papp you recommended MFT from the beginning, and I have indeed now gone that way. Thank you also for sharing the video link from micro four nerds. Neither of these on their own or combined tipped me, but certainly got me looking more.
So - on Wednesday I ordered an Olympus EM-10 second hand that arrived today and I am relieved at its excellent condition. I also determined that the M.Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ pancake lens was my preferred option. I choose not to wait until Black Friday sales in the hope of a bargain and took a risk on ordering an excellent condition used lens for approx half new price. It is advertised as without any scratch or dust.
I’ve also ordered rubber eyecup for the body and USB charger so that I can charge in my car - the supplied charger is mains voltage only, but the body did come with two batteries.
One very important (at least to me) about my TG 4, 5 and 6 cameras and I presume therefore TG7 is that it only has two true apertures of F2 and F2.8. The F8 aperture is just a neutral density filter so you get no extra DoF benefit from using F8. I found this out using the camera underwater and wanting extra DoF naturally went to F8 in aperture priority mode, but all I achieved was extra noise. Ask Dr Google if you don’t believe me.
Good choice. I had an EM10 years ago, then I upgraded to an EM-1, pro-body but same 16 Mp sensor. Lots of fun especially for the tiny prime lenses I had at the time (25mm 1.8 and 45mm 1.8) – they were tiny but excellent. I then sold everything for I don’t know what reason and I still regret it!
