No. Some distros can’t install Python 2, and even the ones that can cannot necessarily get the wxWidget dependency working.

Managing stuff for big firms and for single users environments are two different beasts. On big firms you can get away with legacy stuff for a long time, mostly because big changes are expensive and because you can dilute the cost of not upgrading into a the users (who you are paying to, so they have to adapt to what they have).

Did I mention freelance ? I couldn’t care less about big firms, their retirement plans and their all-inclusive health insurance packages. Good for them, they have backup. Now, what de we do with… I don’t know, the photographers staff that got fired from pretty much any newspaper in the past decade because they now take reader’s submissions ?

Then v3 came out, slowly gaining features. It was different enough from v2 that I wasn’t motivated to adopt it. I think this is a part of the story of where the code gap began.

I have done scientific computation on both Python 2 and 3, the only noticeable difference is Python needs parenthesis with print function and does float division by default even with integers. Aside from that, most scripts written in 2 will work in 3.

This is a “bundle” that I created with PyInstaller, it should run out of the box: just unpack it and run the displaycal script. Created on a Ubuntu 18.04, tested on a Ubuntu 20.04 VM without Python2, seems to run fine (I didn’t try calibrating/profiling from the VM, just starting it up). It doesn’t contain argyll, but that should be no problem.

Likely true, and good to hear. I haven’t looked into it nor needed it. At first, v3 had many quirks and bugs, but by now I am sure they have ironed them out and removed the odd additions.

I wish DisplayCAL all the best however if one works with color critical apps then dedicated monitor is must have. There are really only two options here: Eizo or Nec. They are expensive (oh, very expensive!) and both companies provide they own dedicated software calibration for Linux too (Eizo CN is free but Nec SVII is licensed).

I have noticed that some people are unaware of it.
Of course that does not change the issue with DisplayCAL which is a very needed software and was my first choice when I started my color adventures.

Hopefully someone sees it and could help out?

If we could contact the upstream developer of DisplayCal, perhaps he’d want it on Flathub as a solution for all of us with a modern distro that dropped Python 2.7, while we all wait on a Python 3 version.

@fhoech: Hi! I hope you don’t mind me opening up the flatpak request. Having a flatpak would help everyone who likes your software but can’t use it and should also help to relieve the pressure a bit in getting the Python 3 port done.

Additionally, if you are interested in having an officially blessed flatpak of DisplayCal on Flathub, I do know some people who are involved in the Flathub project and we can make a more formal request for packaging.

Nope you are assuming wrong. I am more an artist that has been working as Graphic Designer in small companies as well for big enterprises around the world for twenty years…

My point is to use the baazar approach when you work with open source tools, learning to use everything you have to get your job done, especially on the Linux Desktop; if you want to be productive in this realm you must learn also how to use CLI application as Imagemagick or Ghostscript, as well Argyll if displaycal risks to become obsolete. But if you don’t like doing this because the problem is not “to get your job done” but is “to break your habits” then you can use Mac if you like being in a *NIX environment or using Windows if you like handle constantly with virus and malware.

I just noticed that DisplayCalGUI is no longer on my machine, was removed as part of regular updates. And anybody who thinks that Linux (whichever distro) should become a viable OS for people who are not very technically minded, has just been proven wrong, because a bunch of those users who may want to use DisplayCal have just been denied that opportunity.

As long as such things happen, and the main response is “you should have learned to use the CLI”, Linux will not be a safe thing to suggest to anyone who is not sufficiently technically inclined and has the time to take matters into their own hands.

I understand users have no real demands to make from people who develeop free, open software in their spare time (also: thanks for doing that!), but does that make it less frustrating if something you use regularly just stops working?

With that in mind: I’m not used to either SF, and I have not done any larger collaborative efforts, but I’ve been developing in Python for some years now, so if I can be of help, I’d be happy to contribute – but will likely require some introduction because I haven’t compiled anything halfway complex in a long time.

Software frequently disappear for me as well on Debian. Running sid so can’t complain things happen. Funnily enough, i “loaned” the calibration device from work a couple of weeks ago and noticed displaycal was gone. Huffed and puffed a bit before cli’ing my way around it.

In an ideal open source world, all opensource software would always run without any dependency issues.

However we can still calibrate our displays, using the command line tools from the terminal. Or make a launcher on our desktop environment menu / panel to launch the command line calibrator.

A little more effort yes, but at the end of the day we are using free software. That people have given their time to create.
