Correct way to work with color managed applications?

Hello, Again me wondering about things related to color calibrated monitors and application that are aware of ICC profiles. So my problem is that I really don’t know how to best work with these applications. What I would assume, that when you apply an ICC profile for your monitor, it should work like some sort of overlay that corrects colors for anything that is being showed via that screen.
