The legend of Color Correction

Actually, in India, they are… green! :joy_cat:

special dedication to colors

The problem with this thread is linguist because in normal English that statement makes no sense because it is re-defining the meaning of “correct”.

Do you want people to try to “correct the colors” and post their results? If so, please assign a license to your image.

I suggest that @mohmad_2 might post an image with “non-correct color”, and a version with “correct color”. If the image also contains a color chart, even better. That might help us understand what the OP means by “color correction”.

I think that OP is thinking of a button called “Correct Colours,” and he is saying that there isn’t one, and never will be. It is not possible to ask a program to make these colours correct.

So I think… we all actually agree.

maybe our friend is dreaming about a creative AI that’s just magic

I find it interesting that actual “color correction” does exist and has been in use for years and years.

I refer to the very basis of color management: the embedded ICC color profile, which is created by taking a picture of an array of known colors and using the result to create Color Correction by means of an embedded matrix or by Look-up Tables.

Even darktable can do it, I’ve read …

But this is obvious to everyone who ever did any post-processing. I don’t understand why it had to be announced in the Darktable category.

I am not so sure about this: with machine learning it is now possible to identify objects in an image, and look up a range of possible colors from a table, then fit a matrix that minimizes the discrepancy. This will not recover the actual colors of objects, but it can produce colors that are not obviously wrong (also, it will of course not work for objects that cannot be identified, or have no default color). I am not aware of this being done yet though.

But that’s not color correction. And that would in any case only work for objects with a well-defined colour (e.g. many flowers show natural variation between individuals, leaves and grass change colour through the season, …). And let’s not start on the influence of the illumination.

and if oranges are green in India … red in Spain … blue for Tintin…

Not to mention that I’ve been watching colorized movies for many years …

On the contrary, you’ve nailed it! The famous Magenta Bun of North Yorkshire. At least, famous In North Yorkshire but almost unknown elsewhere.
