Got ubuntu desktop up and running, and now am trying to figure out how to get opencl working. This isn’t as easy as I thought
Which GPU are you using?
… also: Which of the Ubuntu desktops did you select?
If it’s an Nvidia GPU, with just:
sudo apt install nvidia-opencl-dev nvidia-modprobe
should do it
A key aspect I’d suggest for a distro, is one that has a desktop environment which supports colour management out of the box. E.G. Cinnamon, Gnome or KDE (via colord-kde). I believe the most recent version of XFCE (4.14) also supports colour management.
I think there’s also an advantage to have a point based release, rather than a rolling release based distro, especially if you’d rather just spend time using the system, rather than nursing weekly full updates.
At the moment, I’m trialing Manjaro KDE version, but I’m very wary of rolling distros, and the amount of time needed to upgrade them / maintain them.
@zhopudey, I had a look at Ubuntu Studio. To me it was more tailored towards audio production, with a lot of audio production related tools installed. Perhaps if there was a Ubuntu Design Studio which was tailored more to photography that would be ideal.
There is of course the Fedora Design Suite, alas that runs the Gnome desktop (which I just do not get on with…)
Default ubuntu desktop - it’s gnome I suppose. I have a 1050ti. Will try out Eduardo’s suggestion.
… And there is Gentoo Studio for those who are more experimentally inclined.
I got Ubuntu up and running, with dt 3.4 and opencl! Now, I have win10 on another ssd, also with dt 3.4. All raw files and their xmp are on a separate ssd.
Can I use darktable from either windows or Ubuntu and work on the same raw files? Any chance of conflicts/corruption/catastrophe ?
You need to enable the option to look for updated xmp files on startup. You all need to keep the programs at the same version.
I have been using Manjaro KDE for nearly two years now. I spent less time dealing with updates than I do on my windows work machine.
The only issue I have had with updates was recently with Joplin where the developer creating the AUR package messed up a bit
