Ubuntu 22.04: Darktable 5.0.0 crashes when developing images

Here are the files. I think this is the image I edited the last time DT crashed. The image has two versions. Hence also two XML files.
Markusberg_2020_03_27_0056_02.DNG.xmp (15.0 KB)
Markusberg_2020_03_27_0056_01.DNG.xmp (16.4 KB)
Markusberg_2020_03_27_0056.DNG (35.3 MB)

I also added a second image where DT crashed during editing.
Markusberg_2020_03_27_0005.DNG.xmp (11.7 KB)
Markusberg_2020_03_27_0004.DNG (29.2 MB)

In the next two days I will not do much on the PC, so I will probably have little opportunity to answer. So please donā€™t get it wrong if it takes a little time for me to answer. In any case, thank you in advance for your efforts, tips and help.

Hello @Lucas2025-svg,

I can import, edit and export both Markusberg_2020_03_27_0056.DNG and Markusberg_2020_03_27_0004.DNG using:

  • darktable git master release-5.1.0-37-g1108e69877
  • darktable release 5.0.0

I am compiling from source on Debian stable 12.8 (Bookworm).

EDIT: I am using nvidia-driver/stable,now 535.183.01-1~deb12u1 amd64

The dng/xmp also works for me.

I think we should move this conversation to GitHub. What version of glibc are you currently have in your ubuntu system?

You should also run a memory test in your system to rule that out.

Could you also include the LUT?

I opened on 22.04, current master, and ran with and without opencl. No problems. However, I did get a message about the missing LUT, so in order to get a complete test, the LUT would be required.

Thank you for the test. I now also think that the files as such are fine. I think I should update the driver of the graphics card.

But I wonā€™t be able to risk that until March. I want or I have to make sure that my computer runs perfectly until then.

I canā€™t do that until the weekend at the earliest. But the idea is nevertheless good. Even the best hardware is broken at some point.

Yes, I work with the LUTs a lot and enjoy it. In one of the pictures I had used a LUT.

On my computer, version 2.35 of glibc.

One more info: When I had just switched on my computer, I received the message that there was an update. A new Linux kernel has been installed (6.8.0-51-generic)). Of course, I installed the update immediately.

Then I tested again how DT behaves and therefore developed images. I had the impression that DT now runs a little more stable. In any case, it took much longer for DT to crash.

I suspect that the problem is the graphics card driver not being updated. But as already written: I canā€™t update it at the moment because I canā€™t/donā€™t want to take any risks.

@wpferguson asked if you could share the LUT you used in the sample file. Just to be sure that we can run a complete test.

Working with hardware/driver which might have a problem is also risky ā€¦
At the very least, you should be very conscientious when creating backups as long as the cause of the crashes has not been identified.

Have you tried to start darktable with empty .config and .cache ? There are repeated reports of crashes caused by damaged darktablerc, data.db, library.db or caches. See darktable user manual - darktable , --configdir, --datadir, --cachedir

Oh sorry, I guess I misunderstood. Attached is the LUT.
Korben 214.zip (319.4 KB)

Agrees. However, I create backups regularly.

Thanks for the hint. No, I hadnā€™t tested that yet. As soon as I find the time, I will make up for it.

No issues editing the images. Tested about 15 minutes with dt 5.1.0+46~g1f056509ab, ā€œfreshā€ install (empty .config and .cache).

Thank you very much for your efforts and your work.

Many thanks to everyone for your tips, hints and tests.

I think Iā€™ll bring my Ubuntu to 24.04 from mid-March and then update the graphics card driver.

From what Iā€™ve seen and read so far, it should work after that. Until then, I can still work with function 4.8. Thatā€™s not an issue.

In another forum, it was suggested to me that the combination of the latest version of DT and the Nvidia driver 470 canā€™t work well and I should definitely update.

This worked for me.
DT crashed at the start.
I renamed the darktable directories in .cache and .config and it worked.
Probably because of the update to version 5.0.0.
