Underexposed help (noob)

I think the original image was underexposed. By the choice of only using the jpg, you are throwing away useful sensor data that could be used to improve the image. There is not much you can do with just the jpg.

One thing you can try to do is to use mask to treat each area differently. A mask for the blue/pink flowers, one for the tree bark and one for the bird.

Shoot in raw + jpg. Use the jpg to judge if you want to further develop the image in raw. Delete the raw if you are happy with the jpg.

Done with gimp - tree could be used as a natural bokeh.
