I finally determined the problem to be the NVIDIA driver. When I saw that the GPU memory 100% utilized with a .RAF file and hardly any additional memory usage when opening a .NEF file, I decided to try an older driver. I had to roll the driver back to early 2023 version before the issue disappeared. Thanks to all, especially g-man, for your efforts to resolve my problem.
Not actually familiar with that level of detail, sorry. Even if true, it wouldn’t explain such a huge difference, and it would affect loading only, not the processing as we finally saw…

Can you provide more details? What driver version you had? Source? Which one ended up working? It might help someone else in the future.

I had issues with the latest NVIDIA studio driver for GTX1050 (version 536.99) I rolled back to version 531.41 studio driver and it works great. I downloaded the drivers from the NVIDIA website.
