What are you listening to?

Today, we are going to hear a performance of Secret Byrd by the Gesualdo Six.

This will be after we have been to the Atholl Gathering, where we be wandering around and listening to the piping competitions…

A few months ago, I discovered KEXP’s YouTube channel and I loved the concept of promoting artists in the form of short live performances.
I discovered a couple bands through this channel, and I subscribed in order to get informed about new released videos.

Late January or early February, I saw a notification for a newly released video, filmed in France during the Transmusicales music festival in Rennes (Brittany), and the thumbnail show two disguised guys with a really strange outfit. Their name? Angine de Poitrine. A name as crazy as their outfits. It didn’t really make want to watch, I thought it would be some punk band, not my thing. But after a few days seeing this notification popping again, I decided to watch it finally. And… what the heck? I never heard something like that. I didn’t realize the guitarist/bassist was actually playing a microtonal instrument, thinking that the out-of-state feel was created through some kind of modulation effect. What really hooked me up was how they played with tempo and time signature, avoiding the 4/4 as much as possible, yet sounding so groovy.

Since then, Angine de Poitrine blew up the international music scene, everyone is talking about that weird Québécois band, including Rick Beato. For a good reason. And now, everyday I get my dose of AdP through my playlist and I feel happier.

I’m surprised nobify here mentioned AdP. Here’s the KEXP video link, starting at the the “Fabienk” song which I really like, but maybe I’m partial because they call “Sébastien” half the way through the song…

The thing about Eurovision and the UK runs deep… Everyone in the UK knows that, in general the artist, however famous or good, won’t get any points… Nil point, as they say… It’s become a ‘joke’ not to give UK any points… Not in a nasty way, just a thing that happens.

The UK followers seem to be fine with this, enjoying Eurovision for the outrageous performance and glitter and dancing… A generally good feeling show that some people absolutely love.

Me, I don’t watch it, not interested, but being from the UK I understand we’ll never win again, let alone get more than a consolation point or two…

Is this Eurovision or the World Cup?
