What are your typical tone mapping methods

RawTherapee, one click, auto-matched tone curve:

Looks like RT gets that same as shot wb with red and green being almost 1.0…way too blue for the scene I think. You can see it overall and in the clouds where the highlights should be less contaminated by blue

Custom on the black for lack of a better spot

or just setting it to daylight…seems a lot more like where the wb should be…

Edit …exif data shows wb setting at incandescent so likely why it gets a 3000K starting value on import

Ooh, I don’t like that.

I shot a grey card before taking the shot and I white balanced off that. Not saying it’s perfect, but should be a good starting point.

Your edit with WB set to daylight looks very similar to mine don’t you think?

Your exif data says that you had it set at incandescent… maybe the light is not what I think it was but its a strange result outdoors to start with r and g at 1… and blue twice the multiplier of red…

Yeah! Setting WB to Daylight did the trick. I didn’t have to do much else to get a good rendition.

Why not?

@cedric Just because it looks very blue to me.

I can now see that I had set WB to incandescant in camera (because I never really double check it when I am shooting raw). What is the result of your one click solution if the WB is set to daylight?

@Terry I am going to check out the shadows and highlights module and base curve. I will admit I have always stayed to the scene referred recommended modules, I don’t really know why.

The developer of filmic had very strong views which he expressed. Shadow and highlights produces a different look to his tone equalizer module or his color balance rgb module. I use all three of these modules in combination to control shadows. He was a strong advocate against shadow and highlights module and believed his tone equalizer module replaced it, but I find the look is very different and photography after all is about the look. So I choose to use whatever gives me the look I like and become less concerned about being scene referred or displayed referred. But that is just me.

I also employ this approach, rather than adhering strictly to a scene-referred workflow. Ultimately, the final image’s aesthetic is what truly matters.

Yes, I also see that the Color Space is Adobe.

In RT, I set the WB to 6504K, tint = 1.

Same 1-click button, same downsize ratio 0.21, voila:

I used 1-click because I don’t use dt with it’s kajillion modules and options and was trying to demonstrate an easy use of RT.

What do you think now?

If you want a single click solution, why shoot raw? You get a single click solution with just using the camera jpg.

I did not shoot raw - it is @thehatterman 's file offered for ‘play_raw’ …

… I don’t personally “want” a single-click solution, I was just playing raw.

It sounds like you are advocating for a simple single click processing.

We are off topic. I won’t distract from the play raw any more.

I am certainly not “advocating for a simple single click processing” … bye.

I think that the default auto-matched curve also uses the film option but there are something like 6 options for the auto curve in RT, much like filmic in DT used to have all of the different color preservation modes so simply altering that can really change things as well and give a much different output for that tone mapping approach…

Here is my workflow:

  1. (raw CA, lens correction, profiled denoise, these I auto-apply)
  2. fix exposure
  3. set white balance to taste (within daylight)
  4. enable local contrast
  5. specific to this image: try to separate the front red bird from the bush using color equalizer

The image has nice color harmony (orange-blue), but maybe it would have been better to compose from an angle where the bush and the bird are distinct. You can adjust sharpness to taste.

(xmp should be embedded in the image)

That only influences JPG output, and is irrelevant for raw processing. But I guess that’s also getting off-topic.
