Without having read all replies so far, here is my schema:
~/Bilder/Archiv/YYYY/MM/YYYY_MM_DD_short description or title/originalNameFromCamera
- The “Bilder” part is the localised “Pictures” that was there when I installed the system, on other computers I had other prefixes like “images” or something like that. Doesn’t really matter.
- “Archiv” as I have other stuff in there that I don’t want to include it in backups. Not that I made any backups in the last few years. But maybe some day I will get back to that and then it’s nice to have the system set up for it.
- I have the intermediate month layer since I did a 365 project where I took photos every day.
- The complete date is repeated in the final folder name to make it obvious what I am looking at when browsing folders. The shot title is in the folder name for the same reason.
- I keep the original camera’s file names as I don’t care about those. I don’t work with individual files but whole folders.
When exporting from darktable I keep the default darktable_exported
inside the image directory. That way I have everything in one place and can easily copy it around as needed.
Oh, and of course the best text editor is Kate. Followed by vi(m) for quick and small edits from the shell.
