Work, life and other detours

Oh, I still had to pay for the CDs. It wasn’t quick and proper in my experience. 2 weeks+ wait for them. I had to call ahead and visit the office 2-3 times to fill out forms and then do the delivery. I also made CDs with my data / observations / videos since I was a kind of medical expert myself.

For a sec there, I thought of Patrick Stewart’s Xavier. Ha ha.

Job search update. No success in the job search yet. More in line with my confidence level than people’s encouragement here. Applying for all sorts of plausible job calls at the City. Hope I at least get one interview for the lowest level admin position. Stats: 24 applications, 4 rejections (2 qualifications unmet, 1 met but no interview, 1 reasons unknown) and dozens more to submit before their deadlines.

You can do it! But you’ve barely started.

I think the number is not so important. It’s more about the quality. Optimize it every time and give it to someone for prove reading.

The idea is increasing the quality as I gain experience in marketing myself and thinking through and learning about things. Quantity is also important when the applicant pool is so large. There must be some job calls to which less people respond. From what I have heard, there are at least 300 per job call. I will outlast them all. Muahahaha.

@Brian_Innes Any updates?

Personal update. I was delivering for the food bank as usual in a busy area. Was in a collision turning left (wide turn in Canada) on a yellow light (that is when left turns turn on busy street). Collision. I am fine. Minivan is pretty much fine with only one light of 3 out on the left; however, since it is super old, like everything else I own, the insurance company will likely not let me drive it in the future. So, ouch on the piggy bank, since I would have to get a replacement, which I have been postponing as much as possible.

On the job search front. Well, more rejections. I am getting closer, since the reason is that they either found more capable people or those with more seniority take priority. It is good that there is indication of the reason. This is true for the majority of the rejections through the internal job call platform. The feedback is useful for me to know which jobs I can focus on or work on being more eligible going forward.

@afre , no updates yet. Expecting it’ll be the year 2022 before I see the next specialist!

Sorry to hear about your accident!

Sorry to hear about your collision, and its consequences for the piggy bank. You really don’t need that at the moment. :-1: Frequently the detours in life can be retrospectively identified as helpful, but almost never whilst experiencing them. :disappointed: I empathize.

Insurance company or at least the agent is giving us a hard time. Why can’t we get a rental vehicle right away? It has been two weeks. My mom contacted the rental company today with a demanding tone and got 48 hrs. A VW that feels like a toy. Better than nothing. For context, she had dental surgery on Monday and so a car would make things a whole lot easier.

Just now I saw a lightly used car that we may want to buy. So maybe we won’t need a rental next week. I think that is what the insurance people want. They are supposed to cover up to $900. If we buy a car, then all that doesn’t have to go to us.

On the job search front, I have one breakthrough application. I am to do a written assessment for a few days. Don’t know its nature and haven’t written a report or exam in a very long time. It is for a temp job with the City still, but at least it is a real one this time, doing what I want to do, unlike what I have now.

@afre, hopefully the cart purchase goes OK, and you won’t have to rely on a rental car. Good luck with the exam!

Bought a new car.
Or rather, ordered one. ETA is 3-5 months.
No more rental car coverage yesterday onward. Paying out of pocket now.

Received booster shot on Friday.
2.75 hours for parking, lineup in cold and waiting after shot.
Walk-in so much sooner than appointments (earliest would be Feb!)

(First?) Interview on Tuesday!

What a drag to have to wait so long for the car!
All the best for the interview :+1:

That’s a bit of a wait for a new car! I’ve never actually ever bought a brand new car, I always buy previously enjoyed ones. My next one will probably be automatic transmission, due to my health issues making a manual transmission somewhat bothersome. Although I’m still waiting to hear back from the DVLA with regards to medical licence.

I’m getting my booster this afternoon!

Good luck with your interview @afre !

No choice during the pandemic: some used cars are more expensive than new ones. Major shortages.

Turned to a (sketchy) car share. My data and financial information are all theirs for a discount (compared to the normal rental players).

Interview was fine. Had good vibes. Got a conversation going. I doubt it was impressive or comprehensive enough but who knows. I tend to underestimate myself. 2-3 week wait.

Back to theSearch, the name of my wonderful journey of applying for jobs…

Yes! Great!

Boo, stop doing that.

@paperdigits The assessment and interview was a success but due to an inequitable issue I was not hired and quite a few of my applications were disregarded. It was for a really good job too: pay, level and resume wise. Came as a shock because I had my hopes up. All of the sudden opportunities were taken away from me. Still persisting but it has greatly affected the quality of my subsequent applications.

@Brian_Innes How are things with you? Have you been taken care of by your medical providers?

Alas, despite seeing a Professor of Neurology last week, I’ve now been referred back to my regular Dr of Neurology, for “more tests”.

It seems “more tests” are to look for something genetic / degenerative, along the lines of Multiple Sclerosis etc…

Either that or its a “code phrase” for palming the patient off until he gives up looking for a diagnosis…

Years ago, I met a professor of neurology at a social function. I described some stuff about my neuropathy symptoms and how a couple of previous neurologists had been unable to help me. He told me he thought he could help and told me to make an appointment to see him.

When I called to get an appointment, the receptionist insisted on me describing my problems, then she informed me that, “He does not work with that kind of thing.” She would not even entertain the fact that he had personally told me to make an appointment with him. I could not get by her.

That was 25 or 30 years ago, and I still get steamed when I recall it. :rage:

Hey, I unlisted this thread last month, as it has reached maturity and also contains personal information. Thanks for all your participation and feedback.

Unfortunately, I am still searching. I never had much luck in all my life. As a result, I don’t have any expectations. Of course, I try/tend to see the glass as half full.
