Over the years I have photographed what draws my attention. In that time my education has been to learn how to express, as best possible, what caught my attention and why it captured my muse.
A scene, like our personality, has three views of perspective in my opinion. The portrait styles of photography show how we see ourselves through being staged and styled to impart a specific idea. Similarly, documentary styles of photography show how others perceive us in capturing a moment in time matter of factly. The candid styles of photography show who we are, especially when no one is looking. This last is where I believe the soul takes a peek out and lets us see it, the true us we are careful about exposing. In nature, it is these candid photographs I look for in the wildlife and the plant life.
The tools and techniques of the photographic craft are what we use to express something beyond what our eyes see. Nuances in color, composure, texture, et. al. can profoundly affect a photograph’s expression or interpretation. They are used similarly to words, punctuation, rhyme and rhythm, and tempo are used in writing; to tap the sense of wonder, curiosity, anger, pleasure… anything that provokes an intentional response. In photography it is using the light, framing, camera skills, composure, and timing to capture more than the photogenic aspects. Being ready with the knowledge of the photographic craft to capture the all too rare moments presented by the wilderness, whether natural or urban.
My works of photography are to introduce or share with others the wonders and mysteries of nature. To make the viewer acutely aware of this planet we share. In a way, to give nature a chance to earn their respect. Through this awareness that people can affect the first area of influence they have in its protection - themselves. To take a hard look honestly at their interaction and impact to find a balance, preferably symbiotic, with the natural world.
What I do is fun and I wish it to remain so. There is a profound connection with the wilderness that I hope in time will become evident to the viewer in my works. The more knowledge that can be obtained the more the muses will be able to articulate what is seen and felt. To refine the candid moments captured in photography and present a little insight into the world around us.
