5.9 can not launch external editor

@lphilpot In the Change Executable file selector dialog, with image selected it still doesn’t show *.exes. You have to select All Files.

Yes, I found this also

The first one is the only one I use but it works fine.

@lphilpot, other than the one that you are using (the first one) do the others work?

In the dev version? None of them. I’ve not tried the others in the stable version, other than using GIMP prior to AP.

Also this is the dev version downloaded from the links posted a while back by @Jade_NL (maybe?*) not the @gaaned92 build.

* on my phone right now and can’t really look

FYI I have proposed a “fix” (more like a workaround) which will use the old code for launching the external editor in case a failure is detected.

@lphilpot If nothing starts, it makes me wonder whether you’re doing the right thing.

The dropdown is not the way to execute the external command, its just a selection tool.

You always have to click the actual export button afterwards to run the command.

It is a little confusing tbh, but that’s how it currently works.

@Thanatomanic, I just tried that and it’s still not working.

:flushed: I retract everything I wrote earlier. Except the .exe part. :smiley:

Thanks.

@lphilpot, glad to hear that things are working for you. Hopefully, I’ll be able to test the “work around” soon as the issue still exists for me.

Your path is rather strange. “C:\Program Files (x86)” is for 32 bit programs and it looks like you have a 64 bit folder into the 32 bit one.
Usually 64 bit versions of Photoshop are stored under the “C:\Program Files" folder.

Anyway, I don’t know if this can cause your problem.

It’s the default install directory for my software. The software installs both a 32 bit and 64 bit version.

@Lawrence37,

When I run @gaaned92 5.9-7 Photoshop loads just fine. The option file shows. .
CustomEditor=C:\Program Files (x86)\Photoshop CS6\x64\photoshop.exe

When I run 5.9-57 Photoshop fails due to path error. The option file shows. .
CustomEditor=C:\Program Files (x86)\Photoshop CS6\x64\photoshop.exe

They are the same

5.9-7 - This is what shows in the preferences for the custom editor path. .
C:\Program Files (x86)\Photoshop CS6\x64\photoshop.exe

5.9-57 - This is what shows in the preferences for the custom editor path. .
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Photoshop CS6\x64\photoshop.exe”

They are not the same as there are " marks in the preferences command line in 5.9-57

The path in 5.9-57 was done thought the change executable link.

Might be nothing at all, but thought you might want to know.

FWIW, when I picked the exe with the UI / dialog, it put double backslashes and quotes in the options file, e.g., "C:\\Program Files\\GIMP 2\\bin\\gimp-2.10.exe". Normally I’d think if quoted the escaped backslashes would be unnecessary, but that’s what it did.

I tried what you just mentioned. .

The option file shows four back slashes not two.

I would paste the path here for the option file, but when I do that the four back slashes shows up here as two.

Sounds like the forum Markdown editor is removing your extra backslashes. It didn’t take mine out, no idea why it’s different (I’m in Firefox).

Just a shot in the dark, but have you tried manually editing the path various ways (one, two backslashes, forward slashes, etc.) in the options file as a test? Sounds like there may be some kind of unusual translation going on… ?

What’s strange is that the option file and preferences in 5.9-56 or 5.9-57 don’t appear to be syncing. Yet the syncing in versions before the external editor enhancement seems okay.

I’m beginning to think that it’s my version of Photoshop. I say that because after the install, it does not show up i…I’m beginning to think that it’s my version of Photoshop. I say that because after the install, it does not show up in “Programs and Features” where it can be uninstalled.

Yeah, its entry should be here in the registry: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. Or maybe here: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Uninstall, but I think it’s unlikely.

But like you implied, that’s not related to RT.

I’m so confused at this point that I’m just going to wait and see what @Lawrence37 comes up with.

Thanks @lphilpot for your input.

FWIW, I still have no trouble getting Photoshop to start :person_shrugging: with RT 5.9-62 on Windows 10. My options file looks like this:

[External Editor]
EditorKind=1
GimpDir=C:\\Users\\Roel
PhotoshopDir=C:\\Users\\Roel
CustomEditor=
OutputDir=1
CustomOutputDir=C:\\Users\\Roel\\AppData\\Local\\Temp
Float32=false
BypassOutputProfile=false
Names=Photoshop;GIMP;IrfanView;
Commands="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Adobe Photoshop 2020\\Photoshop.exe";"C:\\Program Files\\GIMP 2\\bin\\gimp-2.10.exe";"C:\\Program Files\\IrfanView\\i_view64.exe";
IconsSerialized=;;;
EditorIndex=0

Are you looking in the correct folder? C:\Users\Roel\AppData\Local\RawTherapee may exist in different variants. Please check that you’re editing options when RT is closed and that you edit the file with the correct modification date.
