A bit of fun with GMIC and ImageMagick (Poincare disks)

One of the new GMIC options is the Poincaré projection as explained by @David_Tschumperle in the GMIC v3.4 documentation (G'MIC 3.4.0 : Image Processing in Its Prime!).

I find it fascinating to play with and have incorporated it in a bash script which adds a white background and dropshadow. I shouldn’t use it too often I think but once in a while? Wow. David and team: thank you!

These are really great mike! The geometric shapes are memorizing! You should try and have some drink coasters made out of them. Great work.

Drinks coasters came to mind almost immediately as they make sense from any viewing direction.

Trigger Warning! Once you go down this route, you end up with your mind in a maze-like structure!

I have dived a bit deeper in the effect the Poincaré disk filter in GMIC (and therefore its mathematical underpinnings) has on recognizable images. The main levers are the parameters P and Q which sometimes have drastic effects on the outcome.

I took this image of the Almere Central train station as a basis:

So I built a bash script which iterates over all of the possible combinations of P and Q and outputs the result in a grid-like structure. For those who are interested in the full grid (6200*7702 pixels) I’ll try to make it available for download and scrutiny on my dropbox:

My initial conclusion is that lower P-values provide more of an abstract result in which the original image is no longer recognizable. Higher Q-values leave more of the center of the image intact but push the detail into the circle circumference which has a bit of a messy outcome IMHO. Optimal values for me are P>=8 and Q<=4

Indeed the higher Q values allow something for the mind to anchor to else…it all goes a bit Mandelbrot.
Very nice work and if you’ll pardon my looking at it from a retail perspective, a very nice and unusual way to provide a momento of places visited.
