A Definitive(ish) Guide to How Instagram Handles Images

If you share your photos on Instagram, you should read this. Let’s just say that what you thought you knew about image sizes and quality on IG is probably wrong. Even Meta doesn’t seem to know what’s correct :upside_down_face:

I gave up trying to make sense of how to best upload to Instagram. It seems so convoluted and arbitrarily limiting. Ultimately I made a script using imagemagick that resizes my images to 1080px on the longest side, and pads with white to make a 1080x1080 square.

Though in my case I quickly realized that I am mostly posting photos of small things (insects) using a macro lens to make them big things (high res photos) and then shrinking them back down to small things (low res Instagram images) so it’s all kind of stupid for me to even worry too much about it :laughing: :sob:
