"Analogue Style" in Digital

You’ve introduced me to a whole new genre of entertainment

Yeah, BLR is a black hole of time… Kinda like a few other websites I’ve come across. Sooner or later I had to just say, enough.

I hate how every, single, thing, has turned into tiktok.

I’ve never even been on tiktok, but everywhere is now defacto tiktok.

I think I’ve been on the Tiktok site once. Maybe? And honestly, that was accidental. I meant to click a sibling YouTube link instead. Even my 25 yo daughter says TT is “stupid” (I believe the word was).

Maybe if TT had actual films instead of videos. Then at least it would be more on-topic for this “analogue style” thread! LOL :stuck_out_tongue:

Good point. Even my conversations have become tiktok

Here is my faded/analog style attempt

For the film look I prefer to just deploy a LUT as I haven’t been able to satisfactorily create the full look of some of these LUTs at my level of skill. I know how to cyan tone the sky or add a purple cast to shadows which are some of the more obvious features of some “film” looks but there are other points I haven’t learned to replicate.

Not impressed by the reults in this thread. I believe we need better tooling.

Would be interesting to have @arctic have a go with his (unreleased) custom film emulation software. Have a look at his activity for some jaw dropping examples. They look actually filmic.

Can you be more specific about the kind of end result you are after? Maybe a JPG edited in a tool that achieves it would help.

DT 4.8.1 with an eye to the Kodachrome properties as I understand them.

Something that actually looks like film. At least halation and color film grain needs to be emulated. See Filmbox for a wonderful take on this. 1D LUT support would be a step in the right direction.

I’ve been meaning to create a thread about this forever. Will do soon and report back here.

Hi, I’m from that era of analogue films and I don’t remember my lab working on paper photos with such saturated colours as I’ve seen here. My attempt reminds me of my time. I’ve added some nuance to the background to separate it from the boys on the beach. There is no used red or yellow beach clothing with such saturated colours.

indeed, the colours are striking in these images… @arctic any plans to release your work here? this stuff looks spot-on, there must have been some substantial work going into your simulation.

I think it really suits this composition

Good old Bass Rock. After living in Scotland for a decade, during which I’ve visited Seacliff and Ravensheugh down the coast many times, I recently found that I have relatively recent ancestors (mid 19th Century) from Whitekirk, just inland. Evidently I was drawn back by my genes!

One small tip re an analogue look is to add a bit of negative “clarity” with the Contrast Equaliser to reduce the digital super-sharpness.
