And now for something completely different - again

I was passing one of our second-hand bookshops and noticed a book called, “Whisky Classified”, which gives the flavour profile of some 100 or so different whiskies (the standard offerings from the distilleries, rather than their fancy expressions).

I bought it and transferred the profiles to a spreadsheet, which looks like this:

Distillery,Body,Sweetness,Smoky,Medicinal,Tobacco,Honey,Spicy,Winey,Nutty,Malty,Fruity,Floral
Aberfeldy,2,2,2,0,0,3,2,2,1,2,2,2
Aberlour,3,3,1,0,0,3,2,2,3,3,3,2
Alt A Bhaine,1,3,1,0,0,1,2,0,1,2,2,2
...

The columns are the attributes that are generally used. I then used the R statistics package to produce this picture:

Obviously, the whiskies on the same branch are similar, so if you like Talisker, you will probably like Ardbeg, Kilchoman and Caol Ila as well.

It isn’t totally divorced from what this site is meant for, I had to clean up the diagram with GIMP/G’Mic

wow, great work! is it correct, you cannot read the profiles directly from the x-axis or the y-axis? Would be helpful to see: the more right, the more smoky or sth like this…

No, the X and Y values are distances derived from the attributes, rather than the attributes themselves.

If you want to see the attribute values, it is easier to look at the spreadsheet.

I decided that the LibreOffice spreadsheet could be a problem, and that it would be better if I just posted the text.

It will be fun to give this map a thorough test!

A bit like Munro Bagging

@epeeist wow, thanks for the table
playing with the data, i came to:

This looks great and a lot of fun. If I lived in the UK I could event attempt to conquer them all

On a sidenote, it’s sad how even a website like this has AI written stuff on it…

“Munro Bagging is more than simply conquering peaks—it’s an incredible journey through Scotland’s breathtaking wilderness.”.

This has early(3.5-4) chat gpt all over it. This speech pattern is appearing everywhere, even if stuff not written by AI.

“X is more/not just — it’s Y adjective.”

An interesting plot, how did you do it?

The thing that is immediately apparent is which are the outliers, especially ones that are peaty/medicinal.

The graphics functions can also be used to plot circular diagrams. I upped the number of groups to 8, to get this diagram.

Definitely fodder for r/dataisbeautiful.

Now to find some Kilchoman to taste since that’s definitely one I overlooked in my corner of the diagram.

Where woud the recent Raasay go?

In with Talisker/Ardbeg/Caol Ila.

Well that’s the problem. The copy I have is dated 2012, so it doesn’t cover newer distilleries, like Raasay, LIndores Abbey or Torabhaig.

It also only covers the standard offerings, I have just finished a Talisker finished in a port cask, which definitely ups the sweetness level. As for Kilchoman, I don’t know where you would put their expression finished in Tequila casks.

Coincidentally, a car on our street has a license plate MUNROBGR.

I am sorry to tell you, that i used nonFOSS Software for this. But i am sure, any software for presentations can create such diagrams.

There is a somewhat cynical aphorism from Bertrand Russell, “Most people would rather die than think; indeed they do so”.

We have seen it with conspiracy theorists and “influencers”, people simply accept what they say. My worry is that, even with the hallucinations and slop, people will do the same with AI.

EDIT: Why do you always find something apposite, just after you have made a comment?

It would seem that actual humans are being hired to clean up AI slop
