Yep. I haven’t watched all of it yet.
And if I have a little scrub through, it looks like there are some angry words, cursing, sarcasm and generalizations about the DT community.
I haven’t watched it, so sorry if it’s more nuanced than that, but it looks really offputting to me, and almost like it’s become an obsession for him to be angry with darktable and the people here.

Darktable is more than one person and one vision for how it should be. Unbelievable that he still has to refer to Darktable when he parted ways so long ago. Sad actually.

Think we just need to chill. He’s nearly ready to release ansel v1 and is explaining its features in comparison to darktable from whence it came (with the odd swear word thrown in). I’m 15 mins in on 2x speed.
Actually quite a number of good UI/UX ideas in there.

Almost half the video is dedicated to criticizing darktable: from 2:32 to 4:17.
He says “darktable is a group of man-child who get excited about new toys” and “darktable is not a community because a community is a group of people who care about one another” while lacking enough self awareness to realize that for years he was the most toxic person in the community. He talks about having too much free time, but who had almost six years to mostly write code? I guess he is right: it is our fault (particularly mine) for tolerating such poor behavior for so long. Hopefully we’re doing better in that regard now.
But jesus man, at some point you just need to move on. He took something which should be celebratory (16 bugs left and a pending 1.0) and make it about what he always seems to make it about: taking a shit on the people who eventually got sick of his shit.
I’d argue that it doesn’t matter because it is buried behind all his negativity.

I didn’t get that far, but having skimmed through it now, it mostly seems to be a comparison of the pros and cons of the two code bases.
It does get more inflammatory after about 4:00, which is the part he definitely should have let go.
I take the opposite view point. Look for the good thats there, of which there is much, and ignore the rest.
Of course when you’re working directly with someone it’s different, and the rest can’t really be ignored. That was the case in the past, but no longer.
I don’t disagree with that. Great ideas, not great people skills.

Good to see Aurelien is still around, and still interested in photo editing. He sure is a colorful character.
But good lord, four hours of video is a lot to ask, especially if it’s filled with negativity as you say. I think I’ll pass.
The problem is of course that these things are related. Expression in prose and thought are connected. Long, semi-incoherent, vitrious video ramblings one the one hand, semi-incoherent, inscrutable Diffuse and Sharpen on the other. There are bits of genius in the madness, but separating the two is hard work.
Aurelien was the figurehead of the scene referred revolution. I did learn a lot from his ramblings. If some of you did make it through the video, I’d be grateful for a summary, or a timetable of worthwhile sections.

If you all read his Ansel blog posts it becomes clear that he’s angry at the world and not particularly darktable or the community, it’s just a venue that takes the brunt of the wrath. While it is justified to be angry at the world, a little empathy and mindfulness towards other people is sorely lacking.
This will be my last post on this website because I retire from development. It has cost me too much : too much stress, too many burn-outs, too many years spent fixing other people’s shit and suffering from their bad decisions. I am tired beyond what you can imagine. I hate programming and I hate programmers. I know very few of them who program to build things or to solve problems, most just enjoy too much spending quality time with a computer, and turn into pyromaniac firefighters that you can’t trust to design things. I hate technology and so-called “innovation”: all of this is just a capitalistic scam designed for infinite growth in a World where resources are limited, and we pretend to solve problems created by technology with even more technology. That’s insane. The open-source world inherits the same mindset, including the techno-solutionism , because that’s the kind of brainrot 350 years of capitalism produce, even though FLOSS doesn’t have the profits to justify it. It is full of lies and full of shit, because libre means freedom only for engineers, and users can go to hell. The problem is, I use to believe in those lies, in those values : they were (and still are) mine. But realizing they are only empty words repeated in toxic “communities” of middle-aged white men with B.Eng, M.Sc and Ph.D was a brutal wake-up call. What do we actually do to empower users who actually need it ? At what point casually requiring to use the CLI is it empowering anybody who can’t read code ? We are just contributing to deepen the divide between the computer-litterate elites and the peasants. Remember, we are doing photography software here, not a backend library, not a server infrastructure, but an end-user desktop application.

To be honest, I don’t even know what actually happened – I may have been inactive on the forum back then (or maybe I wasn’t even here yet?), so I’d appreciate if someone could explain to me in short what took place.
“scene-refered is better”, “darktable is a mess” and “people here are bad” are about the only things I associate with this.

He is mostly describing Ansel and what he has done with it but it is all framed and delivered in a comparison of how it fixes all the shit and what is wrong with darktable…
And I believe at the end he says now he is done. He doesn’t like computers or technology etc etc So he does meander a bit
So for the most part it’s a state of the union speech from AP’s perspective…on the state of darktable it’s devs and it’s user group vs Ansel’s
I think he could have done it without all the dark table bashing…
