Hello!
I’m looking for ideas for processing a picture I took of the Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) using darktable. I don’t have the equipment to track objects for long exposures, so the longest shutter I could use was 6 seconds (then the startrails became too obvious.) Really, I would like to learn how to get the most of the information in the RAW to make the best image I can, given the limited exposure time.
My best attempt so far is also attached with the xmp.
Thanks for any advice and help!
Well, I didn’t try TOO much, and I think mine isn’t a very good edit. I’m sure others can do better. The challenge is that there is some background in the image - some noise but perhaps some light pollution too.
From my perspective, you would benefit from more light collection combined with a very dark sky. I don’t know where you are located.
But wait! I see the brightest day for the comet may be tomorrow. So, there is still time to go grab an 200-300 mm reflector telescope and some of those expensive camera adapters. Hurry before you realize it will be a decision you regret for the rest of your life!
Siril seems the most popular software for Astrophotography, but this is my attempt with DT using the new AgX module in DT5.3. My crop would permit an A4 print at photographic quality.
I wonder why you shot at 95 mm when your lens went to 140mm. I would be trying to use a 300+mm lens if available or at least the 140 to get closer.
