Auto-exposure in exposure module goes entirely black

Greetings to everyone of you, I wish you a pleasant new year.
I am fairly new to darktable and loving it for now ! Having used it a bit, from time to time I stumble across things that behave weirdly. That’s often because of me but sometimes I feel like there might be small issue underlying. Darktable is fantastic, so I want to modestly give back to its community by sharing those small difficulties.

Having said that… Is this the best place to begin a chat on whether a difficulty arises from my usage or an issue ?

If it is, then, to the topic of the title
I have got an image, the exposure needs tweaking, I usually just use the exposure slider.

Tonight, I wanted to give a go at auto-exposure as a starter. Unfortunatly the image goes all black.

Have I missed something ?

The default value for this is 50%.

Keep it there and don’t change it, unless you know what it is for.

You can read here what this setting is for:

Yes it seems you have tweaked the exposure mapping setting…you have it set to 0…this need s to be reset to 50% double click the slider…a module reset does not reset this…

There you go, I don’t recall touching this slider at all but if it is there I certainly moved it.
Thanks a lot, also for pointing out the docs, I learned a new feature along the way !

Just FYI one other module works this way…the color mapping settings in the CC module…they are also sticky so if you move them by accident or while color mapping and forget to manually reset them you can get weird colors when using the picker to set WB in the module…

Thanks for the additional info.
I looked at it tonight and it solved the black screen.

Whilst looking at how the sliders are made I assume that the small dot under the slider subtly indicates the default value right ?
Shouldn’t it be the same for this exposure mapping option ?

Or maybe just zero…

Looking at other modules yeah, more like zero…
So there is no way to quickly check if something is off, other than going to the section for exposure mapping in the docs

If you reset the lightness value, the default value is 50% (middle-gray)

Double click the slider…

Yes just double click the slider and it sets to default …

Slider control is explained here…

Also note the section about hard and soft limits…

https://docs.darktable.org/usermanual/4.8/en/darkroom/processing-modules/module-controls/

Normally for most controls you can set them all to default by reseting the module but if its just one control then you double click… The exception to the module reset are the mapping controls and they are sticky and are only reset manually and not by module reset…

I’ve read this section. To put it more clearly, as a beginner I would have benefited from a visual indication of the default value just like the dot indicating zero. Indeed it is not very costly to just reset the sliders or the module to return to the defaults. At least I got the chance to discover this forum, and identified this exception.
