Background removal, possible with reference frames?

Until I recently looked into an automatic way to remove a background, I hadn’t realised this was such a difficult task to automate. I have previously manually masked off the forground subject which can be time consuming to get an accurate selection depending on the background.

I had the idea that if I shot multiple similar frames with only one having the required foreground subject then this might allow automatic foreground subject extraction.

I can see that if there is only one reference frame then background removal is still problematic, but for those with more knowledge on the subject than me, is this likely to be possible with more than one background reference frames?

Thanks.

  • If/when the images are exactly aligned you can deduce the background using a median filter.
  • You can then create an extraction mask using a difference between background and image.
