Bold lost for "Pompiere" fonts

Hi,

For a very long time, I could use the “Pompiere” Google Fonts with bold on Gimp, but for a few weeks it doesn’t work anymore. When I open old documents with texts using Pompiere>bold, if I click on the text, the bold is lost right away.

There is no fonts file for “Pompiere/bold”, but the bold works fine when I use a word processor, my CMS, or Gimp (before) - I think programs use a trick to add bold when it’s not available. Gimp used to di it fine, but not any longer. Now I have to manualy thicken the text which is a nightmare.

Could someone help me find a trick to force Gimp to bold my Pompiere fonts? It’s the fonts I use for my business so I use it all the time. I would really appreciate some help.

Kind regards,
Anthony

Hi and welcome! What version of gimp on what OD?

As you say, there is no separate bold font file - only Pompiere-regular.

For Gimp you can use the on-canvas dialog or bring up the old text editor. Either require selecting the text you want bold.
Edit: Is this the manual / nightmare you refer to.

That Gimp 2.10.38 / kubuntu 24.04

Probably a better and more permanent way is Text-to-Path then stroke the path. Of course the text is no longer editable but will survive a move to another machine.

Hi Paperdigits,
and thanks! I’m using GIMP 2.10.38 on a Microsoft Surface 7

Hi Rich,
Thank you, you are doing exactly what I used to do in the past. For some reason, when I click “bold” in the text editor, just like on your screenshot, it’s not working anymore, nothing is happening. This is why, as a consequence, I now have to do “Text-to-path” and enlarge the selection (and THAT is the nightmare haha).

Again, it used to work, but it’s not working anymore. If not related to a GIMP update, could it be that I ticked or unticked a box in the settings, that disabled the bolding of bold-less fonts such as Pompiere? I even tried to uninstall Gimp et re-install it, I re-installed the font as well, but not change, it won’t bold.

Another look at the problem and I can toggle bold on/off when creating text from scratch (not something I normally do)

Reinstalling Gimp rarely fixes anything. User settings for Windows are held in C:\Users"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\ which is persistent between installs. You could try disabling that by renaming, Start Gimp to make a new default version and see if it makes any difference,
