Thank you for the play,
With GIMP and G’MIC:
A little bit inspired by @dqpcoxeas , a total other one. I tried to sharp it more (most with TR Pixel Sharpener). Also with GIMP and G’MIC:
Thanks!
DT 4.2 with sigmoid and a bit of Color calibration channel mixer fiddling.
Thanks for the photo to play with. Forgive me for making some none editing suggestions. The grass in the foreground could be sharper and this would have been achieved if you used 400 ISO instead of 100 and a smaller f stop. A slightly slower shutter speed would also help you to use a smaller aperture to increase depth of field. I feel most cameras handle 400 ISO very well with little issues if any with noise. Compact cameras maybe less so, but the newer crop APC size sensors definitely.
In my edit, I kept it simple and did not use any masking. I did use both the shadow and highlights (SH) as well as tone equalizer module. I often use the combination of both as I like the visual changes created by the SH module, but I felt the very dark shadows needed lifting with the tone equalizer.

This is my interpretation in dt 4.2.
I found it hard to achieve a white balance I was satisfied with.
Edit: better version
@Terry, thanks for the feedback.
My play in GIMP. Wild adjustments to brightness and contrast in various zones whilst leaving others totally unchanged!
What a different results (as often)!
I thought this image would be nice in black&white. Heavily manipulated in ART.
