Bringing out a subject in the GIMP 2.10.34

Ten years ago I shot this weed - a lone survivor at the end of our street where traffic turns in and out:

With the bright sky and dirt road, the flowers didn’t exactly jump out to the eye. So off to work in the GIMP.

Selected the sky and messed with Colors>Hue, Chroma, Lightness. Selected the flowers and upped the Contrast and Chroma and applied a healthy dose of Filters>Enhance>Unsharp Mask. Selections had a 47px Feather. Then cropped to taste and resized upward.

Feel free to play with the original, Creative Commons etc.

what brings out your subject are halos from pushing slider too far. if the flower should be your subject then crop in more. if you want to be the dark trees as the background, the camera should have been deeper and closer.

The way I would do it. GIMP 2.10.38. Uncropped to show the effect on the whole image.

Taking it one stage further - adding a blur to the background, GIMP 2.10.38
