Canon EOS R RAW Photos (.CR3 Files) Need to be supported

Hello!

I actively use the Canon EOS R for my photos and would prefer to edit them RAW. Unfortunately, the files are exported as CR3 files, which are not supported by the darktable software. I love darktable with all of its modules and would like to edit my photos in darktable as RAW files and not JPG. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or is it possible to put it in the next version update? Thank you!

The developers aren’t canon haters  - if there have been a solution (have a look at exiv2) for this available cr3 support would have been implemented a long time ago …

I think it’s being worked on. There was some legal uncertainty with some contributors but hopefully that has been resolved and some potential steps for the future have been identified.

Have a look at:
https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/issues/1229
and
https://github.com/Exiv2/exiv2/issues/1018#issuecomment-757979745

Hopefully we’ll soon get CR3 support in Exiv2 so that it can be further implemented in other projects which depend on Exiv2.

I suggest that you convert your CR3 files to DNG untill then using Adobe DNG converter or Iridient DNG converter. It’s a huge huge PITA and a waste of storage space but it will allow you to edit raw files. When CR3 support is implemented you can copy the history stack of DNG Sidecars and apply it to the CR3 sidecars and delete DNGs I expect there should be no further changes to the edits when going back to CR3.
