This is really cool. I grew up in an old town with an old railroad that still operates today. The number of people in the country who know how to service and operate these machines must be so small these days.
Indeed. In the US, a lot of the talent pool is aging out, but there are young folk showing interest. A full career doing tourist railroad work can involve numerous relocations.
Doing restoration work is a bit different, there are professionals out there but the majority is done by volunteers like me, a software careerist with home woodworking experience. That group is aging-out also.
It has been over a month since I’ve added anything here … a trip to Melbourne a few weeks ago gave some inspiration; I’m still culling and processing (and will be for a while)
