no, in fact there was a big queue to get in by 10:45 when I arrived. The juvenile gorillas were very active at times, play fighting and banging on the glass right in front of the public. They have a crocodile, endangered species, but I guess it wasnât enjoying the public gaze and went into hiding, not seen all day I believe.
On the way to work on Monday I spotted a small group of eagles in this pasture near a cow and her newborn calf.
They wait for the placenta, Iâve heard. So with all of the calving activity happening itâs quite common to see small groups of raptors hanging out amongst the cows. I had hoped for the calf to come more in to the frame, but mother cow was still cleaning the little one off.
Is this the Tamron? Iâve been looking at that one, but at twice the weight of the 50-300, Iâm leaning to the latter.
It is, on both counts (a Tamron, and beefy). Definitely not a lens Iâd put on my camera on a tripod (Iâve ordered a collar), but for walking around with itâs fine (for me).
You do get a really nice lens for all that weight, though. Itâs sharp (certainly on APS-C, from what I gathered the edges might be a smidgen softer on FF), quick focus, a programmable button (that Iâve mapped to AF-ON, which makes handholding it quite OK). I had my reservations about the VR/VC bit, but itâs surprisingly stable in my Z50II viewfinder, so thatâs a win.
@paka might have some words to say about pairing this lens with a FF camera.
Whatâs the 50-300 youâd compare it with?
The Tamron 50-300mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD, but I see from their website itâs only available on E mount for now. Itâs 610g, so almost half the weight, but of course you lose 100mm of telephoto range. Other than that, they are both very well regarded, and could be paired with the Tamron 17-50mm F4 (E mount only for now) for a 2-lens kit spanning a huge focal range.
Yeah, thatâs certainly a smaller and lighter lens. Whether the 100mm of reach is an issue is up to you, of course, for me the choice was between 50-400 and 150-500 (and briefly, Nikon 180-600), I intend to aim it at birds.
As I said, I do appreciate the function button on the lens, the 50-300mm doesnât appear to have that - then again, might not need it, either.
Letâs hope they bring them both to Z-mount, more choice is always better.
I wonder if the ever make a mid-tier 70-300 kind of lens, like something between the Tamron 70-300 and Nikkor 100-400 VR S. Something with a bit better sharpness / CA and stabilization
Getting this thread back on track, hereâs a snap I took from a ferry on my recent trip to Victoria, BC. This is looking back at Vancouver as the sunâs last rays were showing.
Thatâs heck of setting
Yes, unfortunately most people agree with that point, so itâs a very unaffordable city.
When I lived there, I was paying about $750 rent for a 1-bedroom apartment near downtown. Now itâs over $2000 a month.

Oh Wolf, you have me jonesing my favorite season, Puffy Cloud Season! Just around the corner here in ColoradoâŚ
I shot it in june in north of denmark.
On a similar theme, I snapped these while leaving the mainland en route to Vancouver Island as the sun was setting.
Not my usual subject matter, but I found the geometric patterns pleasing. And the light was lovely of course.
So, yesterday, full moon, still havenât taken a decent picture of it, and still havenât received the collar for the 50-400mm⌠Hand-held it was, and I had to be really quick about it because that cloud was zipping past rather quickly. It was gone a couple of minutes later. So of course I completely blew out the moon like the gigachad that I am.
The collar landed this afternoon, will pick it up tomorrow, and hopefully have some mostly clear skies againâŚ
Good luck⌠I know how frustrating it can be to plan for a full moon shot that doesnât seem to come together.
