Well it was kinda inevitable, the cf card soiled itself.
Probably my own fault, pulled it out of the reader without properly ejecting it first. Now pc and camera wants me to format. Nothing important, only a couple of photographs…
Anyhoo, thought I’d throw it out there and see if anyone comes back with recommended file recovery apps (win 10), foss or otherwise free (I’m cheap)
Hard experience trumps soft opinion.

Cuppla notes for anyone unfamiliar
Text interface not at all daunting especially with the walk through so able to walk you through it.
Had a choice of partitions to choose from. Of course the 1st had an estimated finish time of over 20 hours so nixed that after 20 mins. 2nd found the images within the hour. (??? - let it run)
Recovered images are given a random string filename. Manual renaming would be painful but windoze has a Power Toy for that - PowerRename. Simples.
Cards alive and well and recording pictures again.
None of the images were worth saving but the exercise was invaluable.
