Change background color and remove shadows

Dear all,

for the pictures I have taken couple of months ago (unfortunately I only have the JPG, no RAW file) I would like

  1. to replace the grey background by a pure white / transparent background
  2. remove the grey shadows the boxes produce

Can you give me some hints how to best achieve this with darktable?

Many thanks
Chris

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum.
What you are trying to achieve is best done in software like Gimp or other pixel editor. You can use masks and color replacement modules (like color zones, color lookup table) in darktable to do what you want and get decent results, but darktable is a raw developer and not really intended for this kind of project. It sounds like you want to “cut out” the boxes, so I would look into software that specializes in masking and layers.

I think for this image there is no easy way. Just use the manual selection tool in GIMP and replace the background. Automatic selction will not work well, because there is not enough difference between forground and background.
It’s either human or maybe AI selection  .
