Hello again!
It’s only recently that I’ve learnt the basics of using the channel mixer in the color calibration module. Mostly from watching @s7habo 's great videos. I really like the way it gives a rather powerful way of separating and/or shifting colours. What I didn’t realize to start with is that it also affects saturation (or is it chroma). I suppose it’s obvious actually - if I make the reds more red, the blues more blue etc. it will get more colourful!
What I’m a little puzzled about is, is there a ‘best practice’ for when to use the channel mixer and when to use color balance rgb? It seems to me that there is some overlap, although obviously a rather different approach. Or is it just down user preference?
Apologies if this is covered somewhere else… any thoughts would be great!
From my perspective…one is doing direct math on the pixels and is global unless you mask. CB is changing properties of color in the main tonal ranges although there are also global setting there and you can mask too…
Yes, that makes sense… you see what I mean about overlap
From my very limited experience using channel mixer possibly seems quicker to get a natural looking result, when I’m trying to just slightly shift colours. Greens for example, as I’ve seen mentioned somewhere else. Colour balance allows much more specific changes but at the cost of more masking etc. Possibly! This is just my current impressions…
Depending on what I am trying to do with greens I will often just tweak the green patches in the CLUT module…
I’ve never used CLUT… I have used color zones though. Is one ‘better’ than the other in terms of the pipeline and so on? Comparing apples to pears maybe?
IMO it comes after filmic and so long as you don’t push it, it can be a really nice little module to tweak skies and foliage…I esp like to tweak the browns using it…
I’ll try it - sooner rather than later! Thanks for the input too
There is some overlap, but each module has its own “personality” so you learn which one works best for your workflow.
I use the channel mixer to make broad color changes by using colorfulness and brilliance to make one color less dominating or enhance another. Then I’ll use Color Balance to make more refined adjustments.
Hi Dave, that sounds like a sound workflow… actually not too different to what I do at the moment.
Thanks
