I’m editing a photo that will sometimes be displayed with a circular crop, like the profile images on this site.
Is there a way to show a circle in the crop guide overlay?

Welcome aboard!
None of the available overlays are circular, but you could fake it with a circular drawn mask if your objective is just to see what falls within the circle.
Or perhaps a sharp vignette (vignetting
module with “fall-off radius” set to zero) ?
That way, you can activate/deactivate with one click/hotkey.
Cropping to a circular image isn’t really possible. Images are stored as a rectangular array, to “fake” a circular image you need to use an alpha channel (transparency). And dt doesn’t do transparency (not unreasonable for a photo editor). So there’s no reason to have a circular guide in the cropping module. But you can do a square crop.
Thanks, both suggestions are clever and helpful.
Cropping to a circular image isn’t really possible […] So there’s no reason to have a circular guide
By this logic there’s “no reason” for most of the guide types to exist. A bit inconsiderate to tell me there’s no reason when I’ve just given you one.
