Of possible interest here it think is this blog post which takes us through the process of developing a couple of hundred lines of Python to train a completely free (gratis & open source) Neural Network to automatically colorize monochrome photographs. Obviously the training takes quite a bit of computer time but once trained the results are probably produced a lot faster than hand colorizing.
