Colours overpower grey bird

One of my regular haunts I visited in July last year had - for the first time that I noticed - a white-faced heron, that I struggled to capture. Although there was a shutter count of some 80 images, I’m not sure about keepers. I chose this one to play with but find myself frustrated with the colours. I gave up on trying to preserve the reflection to get something I am grudgingly assigning “mediocre.” Maybe its just fit for deletion?

I tried shifting the greens so it blends into the background more

Quick one:
I went in the opposite direction, trying to embrace the colors and tamping down the contrast of the clutter.
On DT master.

I got a lot of shots of a very similar environment, but with white herons instead. It’s really difficult since the backgrounds are always so busy, and capturing with enough bokeh is impossible since they run away, if we can even get close that is.

I think it’s a beautiful shot and I tried not to change it too much. dt 4.6

Because the bird is fairly monochromatic I reduced the contrast of the background but increased it’s saturation to try to increase the separation.

Kept trying to add more contrast than this, but ended up preferring how the reflection looks with lower contrast overall.

I went for the late-day, dark background look. Lots of details to accommodate, though.

Hmm… I tend to like reflections. I certainly wouldn’t remove it from this image, but here is another take on the scene.

Wow, thanks everyone for all the renditions.
@Terry - you spin me round … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGNiXGX2nLU
@lphilpot - nice, because the muted colours now don’t overpower the bird
@cmonson - mostly I don’t like black & white for wildlife, but this one is growing on me
@age - thank you
@europlatus - I L.I.K.E. I.T. I’d probably prefer not cropping quite so close to the reflection, but the impact is superb
@josemar127 - it’s intense, for sure! Thank you
@dqpcoxeas - what a great difference the black border makes! Colour possibly still a little too vivid for my taste, however.
@jonathanBieler - colours on the bird are very nicely rendered, like the framing and border, too!
@david - thank you. I find the lack of detail on the neck and shoulder of the bird to be the cost, here
@Tim - thank you for the kind evaluation and your nicely-cropped render

(next post for others)

In sum, I feel overwhelmed at how many of you spent the time to play with this capture so soon after I posted it. That may something to do with posting Saturday evening (UTC+10 timezone).

@RachoVolker - thank you
@hatsnp - I hear you (regarding herons and egrets being often hard to capture in a pleasing way!)
@Thomas_Do - thank you, the wide border helps, but I can’t quite put my finger on why
@Thomas_Gulmark - the chemical factory must be just out of frame :wink:
@rasterized - as well as the greens shifting, your tighter crop helps too.

I have on occasion gotten lucky … this is an intermediate egret:
