Seems that although the README had been stating that Filmulator ran on Qt 5.4, it had actually been asking for a QtQuick version that’s from Qt 5.5, and so I just changed which version it wants and now you can simply run it on anything Qt 5.4 or newer.
That means a stock Ubuntu 15.10 can run it now without needing to get a newer Qt.
