configuring a Wacom tablet on Linux

Hi, apparently the Linuxwacom mailing list disappeared, so maybe someone can help me here.
I have a Wacom Intuos S BT since some time but hardly ever use it. Basically, it works out of the box on Debian 10 (Xfce), but scrolling is not enabled and I would like to assign some keys such as shift, ctrl and alt to some of the buttons of the tablet so I can use it like my touchpad in darktable (e.g. scrolling for changing the size of the pen).
So far I have experimented a little bit with xsetwacom and I was able to change the function of the pen’s buttons, but I kind of cannot figure out how to enable scrolling.

edit: meanwhile I was able to assign scrollwheel up and down to the tablet’s first and second button but the tourble is that I need to press the buttons many times if I want to decrease or increase the brush size, leaving my finger on the button does not do anything i.e. increasing of decreasing does not continue
