Crash on facial recognition database retraining after update

So, because of an issue with Appimagelauncher I haven’t been updating digikam since 8.3.0 (on Linux Mint 21.3) but eventually decided to install the 8.6.0 flatpack from the software center instead.

When I start the new installation there is a pop-up “Your face recognition database is outdated and requires retraining…” with the question “Do you want to retrain your database now?” If I answer OK, after a few seconds Digikam crashes / shuts down. Happens every time. I can select Cancel instead and use the application with no problems but the same pop-up is there the next time I start the app.

Any help to avoid this issue will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi @ERYpTION,
Sorry about that. That’s my fault.

Try this to fix the issue. When you launch digiKan, click no for retraining. After digiKam starts, make sure all of the new neutral network models are downloaded by going to Settings, Miscellaneous, System. After all of the new files have been downloaded, you can retrain the face library in Tools, Maintenance.

Again, my apologies.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi @ERYpTION,
No worries. Sorry about that. I added the retraining step before the new face recognition models are downloaded.

Also, the digiKam recommends the AppImage from https://www.digikam.org instead of the Flatpack. We’ve had fewer reports of issues with the AppImage.

Cheers,
Mike

Maybe I will give the appimage a go again. However, as a not very tech-savvy user I find it more challenging to install / integrate an appimage than using a flatpack from the software center. Using Appimagelauncher is just as easy but as mentioned I ran into an issue with it not working for the Digikam appimage previously but perhaps it is time to try again.

Hi @ERYpTION,
use what works. If the flatpack is working well, then stick with it. As my grandmother used to tell me “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Cheers,
Mike
