Create lensfun profiles in times of digital lens corrections

I got a new camera because I couldn’t longer withstand GAS. It came with a cheap kit lens, where digital lens correction is part of the lens design. One can like it or not, but this shouldn’t be the topic here…

I realized that there is no Lensfun profile available for the cheap Canon RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM, so I want to create some profile following the instructions on PIXLS.US - Create lens calibration data for lensfun.

At 18mm there is extremely strong vignette with dark corners (the internal camera distortion correction will push them outside the FOV).

Here is an example:

I wonder if this “non-linear” vignette will effect the lens profiling script such that the described method will give wrong results. Or do you think it will still work?

I think it will work, but the photo you shared won’t. The lines have to extend all the way to the edge of the frame.

Thanks for your response, I think I should give it a try.

Unfortunately … in the viewfinder, the distortion correction is always applied for this lens and I thought, I captured them all way.

You’ll def want to try again

I’ve created a few custom lens profiles using this (older) technique, but for geometric distortion only — when it comes to vegneting and aberation correction, I tend to use the relative modules in RawTherapee.
