Creating a mask from L channel

Hi,
I am trying to create a mask from the L channel. How do I do that?
It is clear that I need to do colors - components - decompose. then I have the lab channels in the second window as layers. but what do I do then? how do I get the channel L as a selection to the other window?

I don’t normally do that in GIMP but here is what I came up with:

  1. Decompose as you have done.
  2. Copy that layer.
  3. Paste it above the original copy.
  4. Drag it into the channels panel (hover over tab to toggle).
  5. Create new mask with that channel as the mask.
