Creating HDR images from CR3

I’m trying to create HDR images from my CR3 files (because I’m going to a workshop on landscape photography in the Dolomite mountains). I’m on W11.

When I use the Create HDR button, a new HDR DNG is created but it is as dark as the image with the lowest exposure no matter whether I use the original CR3s or those converted to DNG. Maybe that’s normal and I do all adjustments in darkroom? But I would have expected something in the middle.

I also installed the lua script ‘HDRMerge’. It doesn’t work on the CR3 files (no new image is created) and with DNGs it creates a completely black image. The output of stand alone HDRMerge on the DNGs is also completely black.

Am I missing something or is there just an issue with CR3?

Yes

The hdrmerge executable doesn’t support CR3 files. There’s a pull request to add it, but it hasn’t been merged yet.

After looking at the hdrmerge code repository, there doesn’t appear to have been any changes since 2018. So, I would say this is probably abandonware.

I’ve been thinking of forking… There has not been any activity over there in a while.

Thanks. Since we’ll do most shots on a tripod using electronic shutter and either the phone app or the timer, the ‘Create HDR’ should be fine. Otherwise I have Affinity Photo which does a decent job and it includes alignment.

the build is quite old and is based on an also old libraw. So don‘t expect camera support for cameras not even known at build time.

you might try to build it with a quite recent libraw library and that pr#235.

you’re comparing apples and oranges…
do you really think, you helped the OP with a solution for his hdrmerge issue?

No need for the snipe

I too would like a HDR solution for my CR3 files from my Canon R7, but I will say that working with a single exposure can produce very good results and HDR is often unnecessary. HDR merging was very helpful when we shot JPGs but now with the CR3 files I feel less so.

I agree and I have a R3 which has a decent dynamic range.
I think it will be an exercise in the workshop and all participants and the coach will be on Lightroom or PS. Since I never did HDR before and in order not to look like a fool, I started to prepare myself and tried to create HDR images in dt. That’s how I stumbled over the issue.

Buddy up with someone for this exercise and look over their shoulder. HDR is no where near as important as it once was because we are not limited to shooting JPGs.
