I am finding DT very useful to organize and manage my collection of images. I like that I can use the copy and import function to take images from my camera and organize them onto my computer. I like that I can then move, copy or rename images if I desire. But one function that I can’t do is rename a folder in my collections list. For me this would be so useful in managing my images.
I wonder if anyone else can see value in doing this? Or can it already be done and I just have missed something? I don’t want to put in a feature request if I am the only person here who sees value in this idea. The developers are too busy with important stuff.
Lets add to this suggestion. I can move and rename images through DT. It would be great to be able move and rename a whole folder. Maybe @wpferguson has already written a LUA script for this. I am using his great script for renaming images.
You are a very generous man Bill. Your renaming script for files is very handy for my needs. I am moving folders off my laptop to an external drive and doing this all within DT would have benefits for me.
Yeah, would be handy for me too. We would be much more flexible in maintaining our file structures when darktable would support this. Rather than rename and have to reconnect to the proper folder. Which works as well…
Maybe you are aware of this maybe not: it is possible to use a so called $(JOBCODE) variable to name the directory you copy and import pictures from camera to. See: darktable user manual - import
For me this would mean to give a new $(JOBCODE) value for each and every day I took pictures.
I have decided not (yet) to use this as I stuck to my old manual routine of copying folder from camera to disk, rename directory name to yyyymmdd-something_useful_for_me and then import in darktable.
I use jobcode all the time. I went to Morocco so the jobcode was Morocco and I got the import to copy into daily folders with jobcode included in the name. In the future it will be so easy to find my Moroccan photos. That is why I love DT as a DAM solution and would like the few improvements I have suggested to make it even more versatile.
