darktabel 4.8.1 and Epson Printer SC-P900 on Mac: incorrect rendering

Hi All,

I am trying to make an Epson SC-P900 / SCP900 printer on Mac working with darktable, version 4.8.1.
The printer is working with other software on the Mac (Apple M1 Pro, Sonoma 14.6.1) as intended. Even the Epson stuff is giving appropriate results.
In darktable, the print is always dislocated and out of the printing area; always off-centre.
It looks like the direction of the paper is always detected incorrect. Paper direction in the printer does not change anything. I tried several configurations in darktable: orientation, layout etc. Always the same result: most of the picture is printed out of the paper by the printer and the rest of the paper is empty.

As the printer is generally working, is there a known inconsistency between darktable and the Epson Driver?

Thanks for support!

I am not sure that darktable can access all bits from the epson print driver, which is part CUPS and part proprietary stuff. I often print from a Mac, but I open a jpeg or tiff in preview and access the epson print driver that way.

I highly doubt we have a lot of testing for this specific functionality.

Hello, not the same problem as you, but I also have problems printing from Linux to an Epson Ecotank photo and a SureColor P7000, using gThumb. Hard to center a photo and the preview is not always the same as the print: sometimes the photo is somewhat enlarged, so a part of the photo is simply missing.

I “solved” this with a Windows laptop with IrfanView installed. That program says in the print dialogue 'Resulting image size on this paper is 9,8x14,4cm" which is always correct. (First time in about 20 years that I touch a Windows machine…).

I suggest, as paperdigits said, not to print directly from darktable on your Mac, but to export a photo, then print from a photo viewer or via the preview route.

I’m been printing from darktable to an Epson Stylus Photo Pro 3800 without problem for years from a GNU/Linux box.

Might be printer specific, I don’t know.

I cannot reproduce on my Mac with a Brother DCP-J140W

Thanks all for comments.
Workaround will be printing exports over external Epson Viewer.
Nevertheless, it’s not satisfying. Maybe there will be a fix in the driver or darktable in near future.
