Darktable 4.6.0 and NAS

I use DT 4.6.0 on Leap 15.5.

Most of the photos for DT are on my local machine. But soon, I hope, will start doing timelapses with raws. The raws will be on the NAS and separate collections. My SSD is only 512Gb minus system minus a whole bunch of personal stuff.

The problem is that the nas is not always on.

How will this affect DT?

Thanks

Darktable has a “copy locally” feature where you can… Copy files to a cache on your local machine and edit them, then sync the sidecar back to your nas.

Then what happens to the "NAS collection’ when the NAS is turned off.

Thanks

The files that you’ve “synched locally” are available to edit, since they’re on you local machine. When you want to sync the edits back to your NAS, turn it on and do so, then the files can be removed.

Sorry, but I don’t understand.

What’s the benefit of sync locally?

  1. It still uses my local ssd
  2. I have to do the syncs back to the nas
  3. Then I have to remove them my ssd (I don’t have enough space)
  4. Then I have to remove them from dt since the nas isn’t online anymore.

You would see skull thumbnails if you try to access the NAS files when they are not available, but that should be probably it.

Edit your photos while your nas is off.

When you resync to the nas, dt handles all this for you.
