If appimage is the official version, which I absolutely embrace, is there a way to use darktable-generate-cache with the appimage? Or is there maybe a separate appimage for this function?
You should have a poke around in the appimae. You can unpack it and inspect the content.
My answer: no idea
Ok thanks, I’ll have a look.
Edit:
Yes there is darktable-generate-cache in usr/bin inside the appimage. I extracted it, made it executable and it runs without problems. I could have come to this solution on myself. Thanx for the hint.
Thank You, IVAN.
I also had a PAF of DarkTable 4.8.1 using the structure of portable 4.6.1 portable and seems to work correctly.
But it isn’t official…
I ask a official version,
Bye

There is no easy way yet. Although you can always mount (or extract) the AppImage and run exposed applications that were inside the image. But this method cannot be called convenient and user-friendly.
The solution that I am going to implement is the launch of an additional program packaged inside the AppImage, the name of which corresponds to the name of the symlink to the AppImage file that is used for launch.
My computer specifications are very good, but I use Windows 7 because it does not collect user data, and it is very wonderful and even better than the upcoming Windows 12. In fact, I am looking at a masterpiece. Microsoft has never released such a system that is almost error-free.
But after installing your program, I get this error message
program:
The procedure entry point CreateFile2 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.
I have tried all the solutions to no avail. My system is updated to the latest version, and I also made sure that all dll files are present. I have confirmed that the problem is due to your software and not my system
Minimum requirement for running dt 4.8.1 is Windows 8. See GitHub - darktable-org/darktable: darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer
Since Microsoft has stopped supporting Windows 7 four years ago, there is no wonder it’s not supported by darktable developers, either. The tone of your post is quite accusatory, to be honest.
You are right.
Those nasty darktable devs prefer spending their time on futilities like adding functionality, rather than sticking to important jobs like supporting obsolete OS versions.
But there is hope: darktable is open source, so you can grab the source code and support Windows 7 yourself !
I think mohmad_2 deserves some slack during the first 4-5 hours Some members, like myself, do not have English as our first language and postings may not come across quite as we intended.
Maybe Windows 7 transfers less user data to Microsoft than later versions but due to numerous security vulnerabilities your user data is probably already shared on the darknet .
Possible. Or his computer is just part of all the botnets used in large-scale attacks. The ones that bring down hospitals and airports.
You might try to build a windows7 supporting 4.8.1 package yourself following an older version of the darktable/packaging/windows at master · darktable-org/darktable · GitHub instructions - older, because you need to use an old mingw environment which might cause headache because recent packages requires windows10.
If you managed to setup a mingw environment on windows7 that meets darktables build requirements (see darktable/cmake/compiler-versions.cmake at master · darktable-org/darktable · GitHub ) then building darktable is no rocket science…
And this no small if considering MSYS2 itself dropped Windows 7 support some time ago…
Just downloaded the official AppImage and removed my old ‘unofficial’ install but now none of my lenses are recognised.
Something to do with lensfun? Does that need to be installed separately with the AppImage?
Ubuntu 22.04
Also it rebuilds the OpenCL stuff every time it opens so it is not finding files.
I just copied the AppImage into /home/AppImages folder that I created, maybe it has to go somewhere else?
Don’t worry guys, in another thread somebody else noticed the AppImage continually building OpenCL on opening so given up (as need to do some urgent processing) so just reinstalled 4.8.1 from the OBS

Hello,
As long as I can do it, I will continue building from sources.
I think that is the only way to be sure the program fits my system.
Appimage, flatpak, snap… sorry, not for me.
I may casually run into issues with lenses or cameras, but I still can refer to discussions where solutions were given.
Rgrds,
Why darktable 4.8.1 still uses lensfun database version 1? I uploaded images to lensfun for my new Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (A058Z). They quickly updated the database. I couldn’t use the mil-tamron.xml file on darktable 4.8.1 for Windows because of a different file description at the top of this xml file. On my Linux Laptop, darktable uses lensfun database version 2.
darktable 4.8.1 still uses v1 because its still on the 0.3.x branch. The lensfun team usually updates te v2 and also v1 databases - so you need to update your lensfun database in windows using the v1 version of the xml file.
