There is nothing new in dt 5.0 in the generation of the opencl kernel. Maybe it is more noticeable with the UI tweaks, but it behaves the same as prior versions.
Brilliant work. Kudos!
I was building Master-Branch since quite some time and could see things progressing …
One question regarding
“Also added a Lua script to auto-apply the appropriate style on import and manually apply styles to a collection of previously-imported images.”
Is there anywhere something like a docu for this script? I fail to find anything that lets me understand how to use this script … …
A lovely Xmas present. Thank you for all your hard work, is really appreciated!
Thank you all! just installed it today.
Ah, once again my beautiful solstice present. Thank you. Very. Much.
Thanks for your reply. I am using Darktable on Windows 11. Do you know where is configuration directory on Windows? So I will find out database files.
Also do we need to uninstall 4.8.1 first and then install 5.0? OR directly install 5.0 so it will replace 4.8.1?

@Shuklendu_Ayachit You should find it at %localappdata%\darktable
(just put that address to the Windows Explorer address field and hit enter.
No need to uninstall the old version.
There’s a FAQ for this: faq | darktable
Arrived on OpenSuse Tumbleweed this morning.
Many thanks to both the dev team and the OpenSuse team for getting it out.
I will raise a wee dram to you both later in the day - Slàinte Mhath
Thank you to all contributors for this version, first tried the app image and installed the version for xUbuntu 24.04 today. Both work as expected for me on Linux Mint 22.
Is that why its now a double click instead of a single click to select an image from the filmstrip? If so, how can I change it back? I’m finding the change mildly annoying to adjust to.
I had a little moment today: We’re on vacation, and my grandma asked for a few photos. So I installed the latest Darktable on my Surface tablet, imported the raws, and edited/exported the photos for her.
This may seem trivial. But I’ve been a customer of Lightroom and Capture One in the past, and they put strict limits on how many times you can install the software. The above situation has happened to me with some regularity, and always involved a silly dance with remote-deactivating some existing licenses, recovering some rarely used account credentials, etc. How refreshing it was to just download and run Darktable, without any fuss.
A merry Christmas to y’all!
Well we are definitely winning in that respect
Plus, unlike Adobe, you haven’t raised your prices this year.
This is because the filmstrip is used both to “open” an image in the darkroom view and to “select one or more images” to act on (e.g. to copy/paste history stacks). Since these operations very closely mimic what a file manager does, we chose to make the UX similar. So,
- double-click to open
- single-click to select a single file
- single-click on a file and then shift-click another to select a range
- ctrl+click on multiple files to select multiple non-contiguous images
This is how it used to work (in like darktable 3.0) and the “selection” had since changed to something non-standard involving the Alt key. So we changed it back. Note that the filmstrip functionality is now also the same as that in the lighttable view, so we’re also making this stuff a bit more consistent between views.
You can’t, sorry.
That’s not true. Darktable’s developers doubled the price since last year!
And time being difficult we will probably quadruple it in Jun 2025.
As explained by @elstoc this change is to have a coherent UX for not only entering darkroom but also to create complex selection. This is also what do all application for the selection and it is now in filmstrip as it was in lighttable. There is no chance this will change and no dev will write a pref for this as it was hard to get the new behavior (yes really even if it feels simple).

I love this one, because I actually never got used to the previous behavior!
Congrats to everyone on this release
