The Capture Sharpening has made my Christmas. I just tried it on some images and on most of them the results are awesome. What a change! I am using a MFT camera without AA filter with quite good lenses. Maybe the fact that it is a small sensor with 16Mpx only, makes so much difference.
As for other changes, as an old Filmic user, I have just started using Sigmoid for some of my images images, so moving to AGX may take some time. ;-). Anyway, it looks very promising.
Great thanks again to all persons involved in 5.4 with special emphasis on Capture Sharpening developers.
I won’t upgrade Os very soon, therefore my question. I tried out the AppImage version, witch works fine, except for the VRam support. Flatpaks is still missing the GPU optimization, like OpenCL both for DT and Blender, so I wonder why people responsible for packaging pulls such flatpaks online.
That person is me and @hub. It is an upstream flatpak issue and there is nothing we as packagers can do about it. It works for nVidia if you install the nVidia flatpak package.
Awesome release! Definitely one of the top three open source, user-end programs ever created, I think. And I’ve been using open source for more than 20 years now!
Love the new darktable. I shudder to think what my photography would be like if I had to use Lightroom. It’s a capable program, but rather boring and insipid compared to the power of DT.
OK; un-installed 5.2 then installed 5.4 as someone suggested but 5.4 still won’t launch. Have Win 11 and it’s up to date. Oh well. Will try again when 5.5 gets released. Going back to 5.2 again.
The problem was only with the Italian language. In macOS, I solved it like this:
Actually, a period (.) was missing from the end of the Italian translation string. I made the change by downloading the it.po file from the official website, searching for the problem, and making the change. I then compiled it into the it.mo file and renamed it to darktable.mo before replacing it in the original file within the package.
I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank all the developers for this 5.4.0 version. This is a truly impressive major release.
With every new version, the software becomes remarkably stable and fast. The interface feels much more responsive now, and the overall performance improvements—especially the new “busy” cursor and the startup speed—make a huge difference in my daily workflow.
I also want to highlight the addition of AgX and Capture Sharpening, which are fantastic tools that significantly improve image quality right from the start.
In my opinion, darktable has reached the maturity of a high-end professional tool. Thank you for your hard work and for moving this project forward in such an impressive way!
Thank you for this wonderful Christmas present.
Happy holidays to all,
Christian
Is this version now colour managed under Wayland? I do dip in and out of the colour management on wayland thread, but thought it might be worth asking in this thread, because I am still very unsure.
I don’t think I can calibrate and profile my display under wayland as Argyllcms doesn’t work under Wayland I beleive?
If I calibrate and profile in X11, using Ubuntu 22.04 for example, can I simply use the generated profile? In this case, can I only profile but not calibrate, due to Wayland not handling the calibration data?
I still remain very lost trying to get to grips with this. Thanks.
I think it will accept the profile but I don’t know how to calibrate myself under wayland.
I installed gnome and x11. Also Wacom does not work under wayland.
To the best of my knowledge - best is to keep the desktop manager and drivers the same when you calibrate and use the calibrated software.
If you are still struggling after this you may want to post a separate thread. Also - DT is approaching a new version. I don’t think this thread is the best for your question.
