darktable 5.6.0 under Linux mint - tone equalizer mask refinements missing?

2026-08-24T22:00:00Z

Hi, after an somewhat exhaustive break I returned to darktable (now version 5.6.0) only to find that in one of my favorite modules, the tone equalizer, I can’t see/find the mask adjustments any more!

I also try to add a screenshot - Question is: What am I missing??
Thank you for helpful information!

Did you look into the advanced tab?

Thank you, g-man, for getting back so quickly!

So, they moved the sliders in question to “advanced”, and what I used to see under “masking” - the gray—sometimes orange—adjustment bar is now gone and I check the effects of moving the sliders in the graph directly?

Actually, when thinking about it, that’s much more straightforward, isn’t it?!..

The adjustment bar was a 2d representation of the histogram. Now just use the histogram that shows in the module.

@Spotty110 IIUC, you are looking in the wrong place. Not your fault, because everything is called “mask” or “masking”, so it’s easy to be confused

The “masking” tab in ToneEq is used to configure the lightness mask that the module uses to compute its effect.

This has nothing to do with the “blend mask”, which is what you use to apply an edit selectively, and which is the one that has the “refinements” (blur, feathering…) - assuming that this is what you have in mind, that is.

To activate the blend mask you have to click on one of these toggles, depending on which mask type you want:

Hope it helps, cheers

EDIT Or maybe I did not understand the question, based on the answer above. I was put off by the mention of “refinements”.

He is looking for the TE mask/filtering for how the module works.
