Hello everyone,
I am currently familiarizing myself with Darktable to find out if it could be an alternative to Lightroom for me. I’m using a manual from the German publisher “Rheinwerkverlag” which has made a good impression on me so far.
I am writing this article here using a translation program and hope that it is reasonably understandable and that the menu items mentioned are translated reasonably correctly.
I am still in the early stages of familiarization.
When I tried to click on “copy and import” in the movie roll, I got an unusual message (see attached screenshot). Unusual also because there was no mention of this in the manual. No matter which of the two options I click on, Darktable unfortunately crashes.
What can I do?
What do I use?
macOs 15.1.1, MacBook Air M1 8GB
Daktable 5.0 (same problem under 4.8)
Hi Daniel and welcome to the forum
It seems as if the screenshot didn’t make it into this post. Could you please check it on your side? Or provide the text written therein, if you are not able to upload the screenshot.
Best regards and a wonderful x-mas time,
Lars.
As the text is very small and in German. Here is the deepL translation: “Before copying images into the darktable base folder, make sure that it is defined as desired.
For more information see the darktable manual.
If necessary, check and correct “the base folder for film rolls” in the Darktable settings dialog → Check and correct import.
Two options are then displayed:
1.) Display and check again
2.) understood and set.
since you’re on macos open a terminal and run /Applications/darktable.app/Contents/MacOS/darktable -d common for more infos.
maybe run open -e ~/.config/darktable/darktablerc and search for the entry plugins/capture/storage/basedirectory this should point to a directory you have write access
ok,
then dt fails quite early. Please run /Applications/darktable.app/Contents/MacOS/darktable -d common > ~/dt_common.log and provide the created log file
OK, now I understand. I didn’t realize that a generated file is stored in my user folder…
However, I cannot upload the generated dt_common.log here, so I have copied and pasted the content:

hm. I have the crashes or let’s call it “problems” as described above in the dialog that pops up when I click on copy & import in the light table.
(I have inserted the text of the dialog above)
Now I have two options:
1.) show & check again
when I select this, the screen goes black, only the mouse pointer is still displayed. The computer no longer responds to any key.
2.)understood & set
until now DT crashed when I clicked on this.
Just tried again, now it seems to work… For whatever reason.
In any case, many thanks for your efforts!
maybe rename the .config/darktable directory to something different and start from scratch to be sure there aren’t databases, settings that causes the issue.
